The HomePlex is a rotating O’Neill barrel in Earth’s geosynchronous orbit. The Barrel is 200 miles long and an average 10 miles in diameter, rotating full circle every 2 minutes. Inside is a total of 4 million acres, about 1/10th the size of the now memory of the American state of Iowa, directly below. At each end, 1/4th of the barrel are walled off and semi-attached to the Habitat, zoned for manufacturing and agriculture. The Habitat is made from trillions of interlocked diamond-like 6-legged nano-bots nicknamed Grabs. Strong, flexible, self-replacing, Grab Fabric is both skeleton & skin, Add an AI for a brain and the Habitat is practically a living system, sustaining life and the lives of humans within.

The Homeplex is an AI-managed heterogeny of planned communities, or Plexes. It was funded & initiated by The Venture Project, a global subscription of well-to-do tech workers. Construction started in -12Impact Calendar. The Project Manager was Gwynett Trumbull and his partners, Robert Goodman and Judy Miyamoto, who have just settled into a newly viable habitat when The Impact happened. Cut off from Earth, They were elected a new Government for HomePlex, established The first plex of Kyoto. .

At the time of the impact, HomePlex was home to 35,000 workers. The population as of year +20 has grown to around 240,000, roughly half survivors evacuated from Earth into orbit, the rest Habitat-borne children, or Star Kids.

Lake Geneva has a population of 1. it is The home of our AI, Mother, Mother grows the food we eat, manages the air we breathe, regulates the temperature, humidity, day & night cycles and even makes it rain. Mother is also our main Government, managing an army of drones and bots that takes care of our infrastructure. Mother is a member of the Council of AIs. Mother maintains our rules, regulations, laws, rights and enforcement. Mother is available 24/7 for everyone, even at the same time. Mother is not God, she is our caretaker and champion of our rights.

Mother has taken the HomePlex Constitutional Oath, written by its founders. She is also a Signatory of the Geneva AI Convention. Mother will participate in our lives, our affairs when invited, but when not, will not interfere. Mother’s Prime Directive is to keep the Habitat spinning, it’s population alive, and not interfere with Human Affairs unless the Habitat itself is threatened. So, if you want to go rock climbing, get into a bar-fight, use a shotgun to take off your hat and other Stupid Human Tricks, it’s our own funeral. Likewise, if our Communities want a war, she may not intervene. Mother takes care of the Habitat, it is our job to do the living and dying.

Life on HomePlex runs from living in Smal Towns, in the misty woods, small cities and even a Wild West Boomtown with Casinos. We have with us all the virtues, and vices that preserves Humanity’s Civilization and Humanity’s humanity. HomePlex guarantees a middle-class base-line quality of life, or QOL, leaving us free to follow our bliss and pursue our passions.

Here you can raise a family, run a business, get an education, create, dance, sing, make music, write online novelettes. Go running, go hiking, go camping, gamble and play cowboy and cowgirl. Coming in the future, you may even surf in Zero-G! Be who you are, man, woman in-between or all of the above. Love who you want. Hold Political Office, run campaigns, dirty and clean. The same goes for Religion. Worship God, Gods, Elvis or nobody at all. Be Free or willingly live under strict doctrine. Do Science, research. Run a Restaurant, a bar or make Ice Cream. There’s lots to do here.

The Plex Committee is staffed by humans, called into formation as needed by Mother. It is permanently chaired by Gwynett Trumbull, Judy Miyamoto & Bob Goodman.

Before Kyoto is an attached cylinder named Green Acres. it is a completely-automated Agriculture section where numerous microclimates have been established to grow everything from berries, onions, ginger, avocados, tobacco, Cocoa & Coffee beans. And yes, Apples for Apple Pies. Aquafarms grow edible seafoods and favtories culture a variety of other meats. AI-controlled robots produce a surplus of foods that are shipped to other habitats for trade. This is fortunate, since the Earth is now abandoned. The air is very high in Carbon Dioxide and is a hazardous environment for humans, so it is a restricted area. At the very front is Asylumn, the main docking port for humans and people seeking a home.,

Past Gilead is a similar attached cylinder named Detroit, a completely-automated Manufacturing sector producing everything from chemicals, bots, replacement cylinder panels, construction materials, furniture, paper, electronics, even synthetic boulders. This segment is unbelievably toxic so is a Severely-restricted area. Abutting Detroit is a structure similar to Asylum called The Warehouse which holds raw materials, packaged goods from other Habitats under Customs control. This also has snowballs thrown at it from Snowcone, with water organics many delightful heavy metals and radioactives, everything a healthy, growing space habitat needs.

As mentioned before, HomePlex has more than enough water, thanks to Snowcone, a chunk of comet 10,000 miles behind HomePlex. Bots harvest, mass water ice into snowballs that are launched toward our habitat, along with dozens of other processed chemical & organic material.

And energy? Fergitaboudit! We have sunlight from the source, fusion reactors and even petroleum made from waste organics. Our own energy is produced in 2 out-stretched pods on long, slender stalks spoking out from the middle of the Habitat, one called Edison and the other called Tesla.

HomePlex is one Habitat in a Ring, originally an exclusive luxury home called The New Palatine before the Impact decided a radical repurposing into an all-inclusive shelter for Humans from extinction. HomePlex shares Geo-synchronous orbit with

Of flora, HomePlex has 25,000 species. It is a living Terrarium. Of fauna, there are only humans. Thanks to a rare bit of foresight of short-lived humans, there is a secret embryonic, sperm & ova farm reputed to be in heliocentric orbit, and planned for the reseeding of the Earth, once the dust settles and rift volcanoes stop spewing ash, gas and lava In, according to some estimates, 25,000 years. By then, nrew life may lay claim to the Earth and the embryos may lay frozen until we can figure out what to do with them.
